Round 5 Anaheim 3
Pre-Qualifying: Ryan's starts are looking better. He nearly holeshot his
pre-qualifier, but crashed into a rear wheel and fell in the 3rd turn.
Nearly a lap down after re-starting the bike, it was on to the consi. In
the consi they only take the top 2 to the night show. Ryan grabbed the holeshot and never looked back.
Heat 1:
In heat 1 Ryan's teammates Lamson and Narita were running 3rd and 5th
all the way to the finish. Ryan was struggling in the back and missed
qualifying for the main by one spot and finished 10th.
LCQ: Ryan
jumped out of the gate in about 7th and made some crazy passes through
the rhythm sections and whoops. The next thing I know he's in 4th where
he stayed the rest of the race taking the final qualifying position.
Main Event: Anaheim 3 had the split start where half
the guys turn right and the rest turn left. Most of the holeshots were
coming from the right side. In the main event Ryan was last gate pick so
he had to line up on the left. Somehow he lined up right next to last
weeks winner Billy Laninovich. Ryan got a great start and followed
Laninovich through the first 2 turns. When they met up with the other
side Ryan was about 8th. Once again he made some passes through the
rhythm section and whoops and moved into 5th! Running order was Tedesco,
Laninovich, Danny Smith, Nate Ramsey, and Abrigo! On lap 3
Ryan made a pass on Smith and moved into 4th! Ramsey made a mistake and
Ryan was closing in on 3rd! Ryan almost crashed twice in the whoops, but
he stayed in 4th for 2 laps until Smith got him back. Ryan was feeling a
bit of pressure now from Metcalf, but tried again to overtake Smith. On
lap 8, over halfway through the race, Ryan came up short on a triple
through the rhythms and went over the bars. The crash did some damage to
the front brake and Ryan's throttle was sticking, but he finished 17th.
However, the AMA officials gave Ryan 19th because they said when Ryan's
mechanic came over to see if he was OK, they saw him touch Ryan's front
brake. Even though he didn't do anything, they said that constituted
outside assistance which is only allowed in the mechanics area. That
means that nothing counted after Ryan's crash. Well Ryan learned a lot.
He knows what to work on over the next 2 weeks when Supercross returns
to San Diego on Feb. 19th. But most of all Ryan now knows he can
run the pace!
